Jeb Bush: Obama ‘reserves the right to change the rules’
Former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.), a likely 2016 GOP presidential contender, blasted President Obama in a speech Wednesday.
Speaking to the Detroit Economic Club, he criticized what he called the president’s “progressive and liberal mindset” which he said hurt working families.
{mosads}“Let’s say you’re a hard-working middle-class family. You work hard. You pay your mortgage on time. As President Obama likes to say: You play by the rules,” he said.
“But for President Obama, one of the rules is this: He reserves the right to change the rules.”
Bush singled out the president’s now-abandoned proposal to tax 529 college savings plans.
“Saving for college is the responsible thing to do. But instead of embracing 529s, the liberals moved to tax them,” he said. “It’s frustrating. But it shows you how they think.”
The administration has said that they dropped the plan because it became a “distraction” from other parts of the president’s agenda.
Bush was speaking under the banner of his new political action committee, which is seen as a precursor to a presidential campaign organization.
The PAC has been steadily hiring Republican operatives who could run a campaign, including the strategist who ran Mitt Romney’s operations in Iowa in 2012 and two messaging consultants based in Washington, D.C.
