Ex-Mexican president: Trump ‘doesn’t deserve’ his wealth
Former Mexican President Vicente Fox says that 2016 GOP contender Donald Trump “doesn’t deserve” his fortune, questioning how the billionaire found business success.
“I don’t know how he’s made so much money. He doesn’t deserve it,” Fox told TMZ on Wednesday in remarks translated from Spanish.
“He’s acted like an idiot,” he continued about Trump’s views on Hispanic immigrants. “As a man of business to another man of business, he has made a mistake, a very stupid mistake.”
{mosads}Trump sharply criticized illegal immigrants and Mexico during his formal campaign launch last month in New York. Critics have called his rhetoric insensitive and racist toward the Hispanic community.
Trump’s remarks led to a number of businesses cutting ties to the real estate mogul. Fox suggested Wednesday evening that Trump should do more to make up for his remarks.
“As punishment he should donate all that money to resolve the immigration problem,” he said.
Fox also called the White House hopeful ignorant about Mexico and its culture.
“He doesn’t truly know Mexico,” Fox said. “He should get to know it and what the Mexican people are about.”
“[They are] interesting people, hardworking people, people with dignity,” he said of Mexicans. “[Trump] has made a mistake a thousand times over.”
At his presidential launch event on June 16, Trump took aim at border security and linked illegal immigration with violent crime.
“They’re sending people who have a lot of problems,” he said at Trump Tower in New York City.
“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” he added. “And some, I assume, are good people.”
Trump has doubled down on those comments despite the hits to his businesses deals.
Celebrity chef José Andrés most recently severed ties with Trump on Wednesday, announcing that his ThinkFoodGroup would no longer open a restaurant in Trump’s upcoming luxury hotel in Washington.
“Donald Trump’s recent statements disparaging immigrants make it impossible for my company and I to move forward with opening a successful Spanish restaurant in Trump International’s upcoming hotel in Washington, D.C.,” he said in a statement.
“More than half my team is Hispanic, as are many of our guests,” Andres added. “And, as a proud Spanish immigrant and recently nationalized myself, I believe that every human being deserves respect, regardless of immigration status.”
Macy’s, NASCAR, NBC and Univision are some of the other corporate partners who have jettisoned Trump.
