Cuomo: Biden run would be ‘good’ for Dems
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who endorsed Hillary Clinton months ago, said Wednesday that a Joe Biden run could be good for Democrats.
“If he did run, I think all Democrats would be in a bind, because they’d have a choice of a number of good candidates,” Cuomo said in Manhattan, according to multiple reports.
“But that’s a good situation to be in, right?” he added.
{mosads}Cuomo’s comments came following an event at New York University, where he was asked if he would be “in a bind” over whom to support in the race, The New York Times reported.
The New York governor said that there was “a certain natural logic” for the vice president to consider launching a campaign for the presidency but emphasized the personal nature of the decision.
“Whatever decision he arrives at, I respect,” Cuomo said, per reports.
Vice President Biden’s decision on a campaign bid is expected later this month, though he gave no clues on which way he is leaning during a speech in Florida on Wednesday.
Cuomo’s endorsement of Clinton, the longtime front-runner for the nomination, came quickly after she announced her White House campaign in April.
That endorsement contrasts with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who served as campaign manager for Clinton’s 2000 Senate bid and has yet to endorse anyone.
“I think Secretary Clinton is offering a more and more powerful vision for addressing the issues that I am deeply focused on,” de Blasio said Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.
“I still think there are some issues we need to hear a little more on it,” he added, “but with each passing day she’s put forward a stronger and clearer vision that some people find very compelling.”
The comments from the New York Democrats came the same day New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced her endorsement of Clinton in an op-ed for Puerto Rico’s largest newspaper, ahead of Clinton’s trip to the island territory on Friday.
