Trump: Jab at Heidi Cruz ‘was a mistake’
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump seemed to show some regret for his part in a feud between him and rival Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) that roped in both men’s wives.
{mosads}When asked about a side-by-side photo of Melania Trump and Heidi Cruz he retweeted, Trump said in an interview with Maureen Dowd in The New York Times that the move “was a mistake.”
“If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t have sent it,” Trump said.
Trump has high disapproval ratings from women, and he said in the interview that he doesn’t have a plan to win women over except to rely on his daughter, Ivanka. Trump also said Saturday that Melania would start campaigning for him Monday.
“I’m just going to be myself,” he said. “I attack men far more than I attack women … And I attack them tougher.
Trump kicked up a storm this week when he suggested in an interview that women who get illegal abortions should be punished, a comment he later walked back.
“This was not real life,” he told Dowd. “This was a hypothetical, so I thought of it in terms of a hypothetical. So that’s where that answer came from, hypothetically.”
Trump has said his wife has pushed him to be more “presidential.”
“You know, there are a lot of people who say, ‘Don’t change.’ I can be as presidential as anybody who ever lived. I can be so presidential if I want,” he told Dowd.
