Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush were both hospitalized in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday. The couple will be unable to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday.
Bush, 92, is in stable condition after being admitted to an intensive care unit at the Houston Methodist Hospital. Bush was admitted to the hospital to “address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia,” a spokesman for the couple said in a statement.
His wife was admitted to the hospital Wednesday “as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing,” the spokesman said.

Former President George W. Bush became the 43rd president following Clinton. Both Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee, will attend the inauguration this Friday.
In his final press conference Wednesday, President Obama extended his prayers to the Bushes.
“They have not only dedicated their lives to this country. They have been a constant source of friendship and support and good counsel for Michelle and me over the years,” Obama said.”They are as fine a couple as we know and so we want to send our prayers and our love to them. Really good people.”
