Freedom Caucus calls on Congress to work through summer recess to pass tax reform

The conservative House Freedom Caucus is calling on House leadership to stay through the summer recess in August in order to come to consensus on Trump’s proposed tax reform plan.

“The House Freedom Caucus has taken an official position in support of the House staying in session through the August recess to continue working to accomplish the priorities of the American people,” the group said in a statement Tuesday.

The conservative group has been a source of frustration for Trump, who tweeted that members of the group were trying to “hurt the Republican agenda” in March after members refused to endorse the GOP plan to repeal and replace ObamaCare. The Freedom Caucus eventually endorsed the second version of the House GOP’s healthcare bill.

Whether Trump will reach out to the far-right group is in question.

On Monday, a top aide to the president said that Trump would seek support from Democrats to pass tax reform through the House, something he threatened to do after Republicans were initially unable to reach consensus on healthcare. 

Last week, Trump bowed to conservative pressure from Grover Norquist and other groups and decided against including an infrastructure spending push in his tax reform agenda.
