Former CIA director on released Comey memos: ‘Not all leaks need to be classified’

James Woolsey on Sunday pushed back on the argument that former FBI Director James Comey was not a leaker because the information in memos he gave to a friend to pass on to The New York Times was not classified.  

“Not all leaks have to be classified. There are a number of things that are extremely sensitive without needing the technical requirements needed for classification,” Woolsey, who served as CIA director under former President Bill Clinton, told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria.

{mosads}The former FBI director revealed in testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week that he passed on information found in his memos about past conversations with President Trump to a friend after Comey was fired.

“I just found it stunning that he would I think give up the secrecy of a conversation with the president of the United States,” Woolsey said on Sunday.

Trump most recently suggested during a press conference in the White House Rose Garden on Friday that there are recordings of his conversations with Comey.

The White House downplayed these claims.
