John Oliver accuses Trump of ‘feeding’ Nazis
Comedian John Oliver condemned President Trump for not calling out white nationalists by name Sunday, saying that he is “feeding” them by not denouncing their actions.
“Nazis are a lot like cats: If they like you, it’s probably because you’re feeding them,” Oliver said.
Oliver said the president should have called out the white nationalist rally that was held in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday specifically, instead of saying that “many sides” are to blame for the rally’s ensuing violence, when white supremacists clashed with counterprotesters.
{mosads}“There aren’t many instances in modern American politics where you can honestly think, ‘That guy really should have mentioned the Nazis,’ but this is emphatically one of them. It’s like a reverse Godwin’s Law: if you fail to mention Nazism, you lose the argument,” he said.
Oliver was responding to a press conference about the motives behind the rally, where former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke told reporters that the rally was about “fulfilling the promises of Donald Trump.”
“We’re going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump, and that’s what we believed in, that’s why we voted for Donald Trump, because he said he’s going to take our country back and that’s what we gotta do,” Duke said.
Trump is taking heat from Democrats and members of the Republican Party for not specifically condemning the white nationalists at the rally over the weekend.
