NY police union: We’re victims of ‘blue racism’ against cops

A police union in New York called the Sergeants Benevolent Association says in a new video that officers are often victims of “blue racism.”

“The average person doesn’t see the things that make me human,” a narrator says. “When they look at me, they see blue.”

The video describes a “strange form of racism” that is growing across the country, and points to the number of police officers who die while on duty. The video says that “blue racism” is “even more racist” than judging a person based on their skin color.

{mosads}The video also points to a “silent majority” of Americans who the association says support police, but it says officers are “vilified” by the public and the news media.

The video cites Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech, in which the civil rights leader said he hoped  his children would be judged by the “content of their character” instead of the “color of their skin.”

The video includes condemnation of the violent actions at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., where one woman died and at least 19 other people were injured.

The union also notes that six police officers were killed the same day the video was completed.
