Actor Mark Ruffalo joins ‘March to Confront White Supremacy’

Actor Mark Ruffalo is marching through Virginia with activists as part of the “March to Confront White Supremacy,” a 111-mile walk from Charlottesville, Va., to Washington.

The star posted photos on Twitter and Instagram of himself on the journey Thursday, saying, “Marching into Trump Country to confront white supremacy.”

“I’m marching today in memory of Heather Heyer, the young woman who lost her life to the hate of white supremacists in Charlottesville, as well as many others who were injured,” he said in a statement.

“Now, we have a President who called participants in the neo-Nazi and white supremacist march in Charlottesville ‘some very fine people.’ Enough is enough. White supremacy must be called out for what it is and defeated. Its very existence is based on violence and is antithetical to American values.”

Last month, hundreds of white supremacists descended on Charlottesville in a “Unite the Right” rally. Demonstrators clashed with counterprotesters repeatedly, resulting in one death and numerous injuries.

Hundreds of people have joined the 10-day march so far. The crowd is slated to arrive in D.C. on Sept. 6, when Congress comes back from its recess. Once there, they’ll hold a rally calling for the end of white supremacy.

The Rev. Cornell William Brooks, former president and CEO of the NAACP, is leading the march.

“After the nation became an eyewitness to a hate crime and an act of terrorism, now the nation has the opportunity to be an eyewitness to the making of nonviolent history,” he said earlier this week.

“That is to say, a city that was visited by the most hateful of crimes can rise up and literally walk through what happened and what continues to Washington to make their concerns known.”
