Pope calls on international community to help with migrants

Pope Francis on Sunday reportedly called on the international community to dedicate more resources to help with refugees and migrants and recommended the establishment of “humanitarian corridors for refugees in the most difficult situations.”

“If we look on our neighbors without mercy we risk that even God will look on us without mercy,” the pope said during a visit to an Italian refugee center, according to Reuters.

The pope also offered kind words to refugees and wore an identification bracelet given to him by an African refugee in a show of solidarity.

“Many who don’t know you are afraid of you,” Francis said. “That makes them think they have the right to judge coldly and harshly.” 

Francis’s comments come days after Trump administration officials announced the U.S. would allow no more than 45,000 refugees into the country next year, the lowest cap ever set for resettlement. 

There are 22.5 million refugees worldwide, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
