Parkland families file lawsuit against gun manufacturer, vendor

The families of two students who were killed in February’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida, are suing the maker and seller of the gun used in the attack.

The parents of students Jaime Guttenberg and Alex Schachter filed a lawsuit on Wednesday saying that American Outdoor Brands is partially responsible for the death of their children after manufacturing the AR-15 assault rifle that was used by the suspected shooter, NBC News reported Thursday.

The lawsuit charges American Outdoor Brands and Sunrise Tactical Supply, the company that reportedly sold the weapon to the shooter, with being “complicit” in the massacre.

“The Guttenbergs and Schachters seek to hold defendants legally responsible for their complicity in the entirely foreseeable, deadly use of the assault-style weapons that they place on the market,” one portion reads of the lawsuit, according to NBC News. 

The lawsuit will challenge a 2001 Florida law that prohibits both state and local governments from suing gun sellers in the event that their weapons are used unlawfully.

“We need to change history when it relates to guns, and we need to make gun makers responsible,” Jaime’s father, Fred Guttenberg, said at a news conference in Miami. “We need to make sure they don’t end up in hands of people who will kill innocents.”

“Bottom line, we need to hold people accountable for this gun violence,” Fred Guttenberg said in a Facebook post about the lawsuit.

Both children were 14 years old when they were gunned down in an attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 14 students and three teachers in February.
