DeMint hits Murkowski on abortion in TV ad

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) is funding a new attack ad that takes aim at Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s (R-Alaska) stance on abortion.

DeMint has been one of Murkowski’s most outspoken critics since she announced her decision to run as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to Tea Party favorite Joe Miller.

She now faces Miller and Democrat Scott McAdams in November’s general election with polls showing solid support for Murkowski’s write-in effort.

“There are three Senate candidates, but only one choice to defend the unborn,” the ad’s narrator says. “Republican Joe Miller is pro-life and the only candidate pledged to oppose taxpayer funding for abortion. Scott McAdams and Lisa Murkowski are pro-abortion and they refuse to oppose using your taxes to pay for it.”

In an e-mail Wednesday to supporters of his Senate Conservatives Fund, which is funding the ad, DeMint wrote: “Democrat Scott McAdams is pro-abortion. Lisa Murkowski is pro-abortion, too. And they’re pretty extreme about it.”

Last month, DeMint forcefully argued to his Senate Republican colleagues that Murkowski be stripped of her top spot on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, a move the caucus declined to make.

DeMint backed Miller post-primary and has raised money for the Republican through his PAC.
