RNC announces $6.2 million haul in May

The Republican National Committee (RNC) raised $6.2 million in May, allowing it to further relieve its debt, the committee announced Monday.

The RNC said it had raised $6.2 million last month and had stockpiled $6.1 million in cash on hand.

{mosads}Just as significantly, the RNC continued its strides under Chairman Reince Priebus to pay down the large amount of debt he had inherited in January. The RNC said it had retired additional debt — the RNC was about $19 million in the hole at the end of April — by about half a million dollars over the last month.

“We are continuing to put this committee in the best possible position to be a partner to our nominee and ensure Barack Obama is a one-term president,” Priebus said in a statement. “We will have the resources to turn back the failed leadership of Barack Obama and return a Republican majority to the U.S. Senate in 2012.”

The RNC boasted of having raised $30 million so far in 2011. By contrast, RNC Chairman Michael Steele had raised just under $37 million by this point in 2009. That number included about $7.3 million in transfers to the RNC, though.
