Huckabee: Glenn Beck called me a Nazi

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee accused conservative talk host Glenn Beck Thursday of likening him to a “Nazi” over his support for first lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign.

On his radio show earlier this week, Beck labeled Huckabee a “progressive” for supporting Obama’s anti-obesity initiative.

Huckabee took exception to that characterization, noting it’s a term Beck has equated with “cancer” and “Nazi.”

{mosads}”What did I do that apparently caused him to link me to a fatal disease and a form of government that murdered millions of innocent Jews?” Huckabee wrote on the website of his political action committee. “I had the audacity — not of hope — but the audacity to give respect to the efforts of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign to address childhood obesity.”

Huckabee said while he has clear differences with the policies of President Obama, he has “appreciated” the first lady’s efforts to combat childhood obesity — efforts Huckabee said Beck misrepresented “either out of ignorance or out of a deliberate attempt to distort them to create yet another ‘boogeyman’ hiding in the closet that he and only he can see.”

Huckabee and Beck both host programs on Fox News, though Beck has announced he is leaving the network.

Michelle Obama has taken heat from conservative commentators and from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for her anti-obesity campaign, which some on the right have derided as government overreach.

“The First Lady’s approach is about personal responsibility — not the government literally taking candy from a baby’s mouth,” Huckabee continued. “[Beck] seems to fancy himself a prophet of sorts for his linking so many people and events together to describe a massive global conspiracy for pretty much everything. Sadly, he seems equally inept at recognizing the obvious fact that children are increasingly obese and that we now see clinical evidence of diseases in children that as recent as 20 years ago were found only in adults, such as Type 2 diabetes.”

It’s not the first time Huckabee has defended the first lady from attacks — speaking to reporters in Washington earlier this year, Huckabee rebutted Palin’s criticism of Michelle Obama, suggesting she misunderstood the first lady’s goals.

“Beck needs to stick to conspiracies that can’t be so easily de-bunked by facts,” Huckabee concluded. “Why Beck has decided to aim his overloaded guns on me is beyond me. But he ought to clean his gun and point it more carefully lest it blow up in his face like it did this time.”
