Crowds line up for Iowa straw poll

{mosads}Bachmann’s tent has more of an air of chaos to it – but that may be a good thing. Bachmann supporters waited in long lines to register and longer lines for food. But it seemed many were coming on their own, unexpectedly, an indication that the enthusiasm she has generated in the state could help her win despite the less extensive field operation.

Her air conditioned tent sits mostly vacant, as the pleasant weather has supporters hanging out outside.

Paul’s area has more of a carnival atmosphere than the others. Several Paul supporters told The Hill that while they had already voted in the straw poll, they had to ask around for help before Paul volunteers had led them to the voting area.

Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) also has a respectable crowd near his tent. He spoke to supporters at 10:30 a.m., and while many hung back under his shaded tent, approximately 50 feet from the stage, he received strong applause.

Rep. Thad McCotter’s area was all but empty. While he rocked out on guitar to Van Morrison’s “Gloria,” only a handful of curious passers-by, most of them in t-shirts from other candidates, stopped to watch.

The event is the first major test of candidates’ organizations in the early caucus state, and a high-stakes affair for both Pawlenty and Bachmann, who need strong showings.
