Carson: I face more scrutiny ‘because I’m a black conservative’

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says he has faced more media scrutiny in his campaign than President Obama did because he’s a black conservative.

“It’s very simple, because I’m a black conservative, and in America you’re not supposed to be black and be a conservative,” Carson said on 93KHJ radio this week, as first reported by BuzzFeed News.

{mosads}“So you know, it’s open-range firing on you, nothing is beyond the pale in that situation,” he added.

The Republican presidential hopeful accused the media of engaging in a “witch hunt” by digging up various aspects of his past, such as his claim of being offered a scholarship to attend West Point.

He previously blamed “secular progressives” for the scrutiny his campaign has come under.

Herman Cain, a black man who ran in the 2012 GOP presidential primary, echoed Carson’s sentiments last month, saying liberals “hate” black conservatives.

“There is only one group of people liberals hate worse than conservatives, and that’s conservatives who happen to be black,” he said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, in November said the media’s coverage of Carson has been unfair.
