McCain won’t endorse in GOP primary
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is sitting out the GOP’s presidential primary.
McCain has “made up his mind” to not endorse a candidate, WPRI reporter Ted Nesi tweeted Thursday.
{mosads}McCain, the GOP’s 2008 presidential nominee, said he will support whoever wins the primary. For now, he is focused on his own Senate reelection campaign.
The Arizona Republican had previously endorsed Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.); Graham dropped out of the presidential race in December.
On Wednesday, McCain said he wasn’t “considering anyone” for an endorsement, after his 2008 running mate Sarah Palin announced she was backing Donald Trump in this year’s GOP race.
“I’ve got my own race to run.”
McCain said he respected Palin’s views and declined to criticize her for endorsing the party front-runner.
Trump faced criticism over the summer after mocking McCain’s time as a prisoner of war, saying: “I like people who weren’t captured.”
