Trump wins North Carolina

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is projected to win the North Carolina primary.

Fox News called the race just after 9:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, about two hours after polls closed in the state. The Associated Press called it shortly after.

{mosads}The victory will give Trump a plurality of the state’s 72 delegates as he seeks to build on his lead over rival Ted Cruz.

However, North Carolina is the only state voting Tuesday that awards delegates on a strictly proportional basis, so Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich will each net some delegates as well.

The Tar Heel State was home to one of the most controversial moments so far in the Trump campaign.

A supporter of the celebrity businessman was arrested last week for sucker punching a protester at a rally in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Cumberland County Sherriff’s office briefly considered bringing charges against Trump for inciting violence but decided against it.
