Poll: Cuccinelli leads McAuliffe in Virginia governor’s race

{mosads}The survey, conducted by Wenzel Strategies on behalf of Citizens United and shared with The Hill, gives Cuccinelli 44 percent support to 36 percent support for McAuliffe.

But slightly more voters see Cuccinelli negatively than McAuliffe, likely because nearly 30 percent of voters say they don’t yet have an opinion on the Democrat.

Thirty-four percent of respondents view Cuccinelli negatively, while 47 percent said they have a favorable opinion of him, and nearly 20 percent are unsure. Thirty-two percent view McAuliffe unfavorably, while 40 percent view him favorably.

Voters are more evenly split, however, on Cuccinelli’s job performance. Forty-nine rate it positively, while 43 percent of respondents rate it negatively.

The Presidential Coalition, an affiliate of Citizens United, has endorsed Cuccinelli in the race.

“Terry McAuliffe is far too out of the mainstream with his liberal agenda for the Commonwealth of Virginia,” David N. Bossie, president of Citizens United, said in a statement on the endorsement.

The new poll, as with other surveys of the race before it, reveals a many voters still haven’t made their decision on the race.

Twenty-one percent of voters are still undecided, and polls of the race have shown varying single-digit leads for both candidates.

Another poll released on Thursday, by Quinnipiac University, put McAuliffe ahead by 5 percentage points. 

The Wenzel Strategies poll was conducted among 800 likely voters statewide from May 14-15 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
