Beau Biden to run for Del. governor in 2016

Vice President Biden’s eldest son announced Thursday he intends to run for governor of Delaware in 2016.

Beau Biden (D) currently serves as the state’s attorney general, and said in a statement he won’t seek reelection this year, according to reports.

Current Delaware Gov. Jack Markell (D), who is serving his second term, cannot run again in 2016 because of the state’s term limits.

{mosads}Biden, 45, took office as the state’s attorney general in 2007. His career in public service began at the Justice Department in 1995. From 1997 until 2002, he worked as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia.

In 2003, he joined the military as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard, and holds the rank of major.

He was elected attorney general in 2006, and reelected in 2010.

Last November, Biden received a “clean bill of health” from the head of neurology at a Texas-based cancer center. He had surgery there after being hospitalized during the summer because he became disoriented on vacation in Indiana.

Biden’s mother was Joe Biden’s first wife, Neilia Hunter, who was killed in a car accident in the early 1970s. 

He spoke at both the 2008 and 2012 Democratic National Conventions.
