DCCC names former Florida gubernatorial nominee to Jumpstart program
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has added Alex Sink, the former Florida gubernatorial nominee, to its Jumpstart program, a designation for top recruits.
It’s the latest indication Democrats are lining up behind Sink in the special election for Florida’s 13th District, now vacant with the passing of Rep. Bill Young (R).
One Democrat already in the race, attorney Jessica Ehrlich, has lost some support since Sink’s entry into the primary. EMILY’s List last week switched its backing from Ehrlich to Sink.
The Jumpstart designation provides candidates with “early financial communications, operational and strategic support,” and is a way for the committee to help boost candidates in competitive races early on.
Young’s passing has given Democrats an opportunity in a swing district that the party had previously failed to successfully contest because of the incumbent’s hold on the district.
Sink joins 19 other candidates in the Jumpstart program.
Republicans are beginning to line up for the race as well, with former state Rep. Larry Crow announcing his candidacy, while a handful of other Republicans could soon enter the contest.
The special election primary is scheduled for Jan. 14, with the general election on March 11.
