Freshman Rep. Veasey wins primary

Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Texas) has won his primary, beating back a self-funding challenger.

The freshman congressman leads businessman Tom Sanchez (D) by 74 percent to 26 percent, with early votes counted. The Associated Press has called the race.

{mosads}Veasey, who is African-American, represents a Dallas-Forth Worth district that has large populations of both African-Americans and Hispanics, and narrowly defeated a Hispanic former lawmaker in 2012. But Veasey is known as a hard-charging campaigner and got a late boost from an endorsement from President Obama. The early election results indicate he’s cemented himself in the district since winning that race.

Veasey is viewed as a rising star in Texas Democratic politics.
