Elizabeth Warren endorses Tierney

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is lending a hand to Rep. John Tierney (D-Mass.) in his Democratic primary campaign. 

The liberal icon and freshman senator endorsed Tierney at an event in Salem on Monday, adding her name to a long list of other Democrats who are backing the nine-term lawmaker ahead of his competitive contest. 

{mosads}“Congressman Tierney is a tireless champion for Massachusetts families,” Warren said in a statement. “We need to send him back to Washington so he can continue fighting for a level playing field for working families.” 

Warren has worked with Tierney previously, both before she ran for Senate and as colleagues in Congress on issues such as consumer protection and student loan interest rates.

She adds her name to a list of strong Democratic establishment supporters, including President Obama, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Despite the endorsements, Tierney faces a competitive challenge by political newcomer and former Marine Seth Moulton in the Sept. 9 primary race. Moulton boasts endorsements of his own, including former presidential adviser David Gergen, Hollywood director Marc Webb and retired Gens. David Petraeus and Stanley McChrystal. 

If Tierney survives the primary, he faces a rematch against Republican candidate Richard Tisei, whom Tierney just edged in the 2012 election. Tisei is one of national Republicans’ top recruits and on Monday also received the endorsement of former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who said the former state senator and 2010 lieutenant governor nominee would be an “independent and effective leader” for the district.
