Next Dingell to continue House dynasty

Democratic National Committee member Debbie Dingell has cruised to a primary win to succeed her husband, retiring Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), all but guaranteeing a continuation of the legendary dynasty in Congress.

{mosads}The Associated Press has called the race for Dingell, who led her primary opponent with 77 percent of the vote and 22 percent of precincts reporting.

Dingell’s win means she’ll likely continue a family dynasty in a heavily Democratic suburban Detroit district that stretches back to the 1930s.

Dingell has long been involved in Democratic politics and Michigan civic life, serving on the DNC, as chairwoman of the Wayne State University Board of Governors and former head of the General Motors Foundation.

Her 88-year-old husband is the longest-serving House member in history, and his father, former Rep. John Dingell Sr. (D-Mich.), held the same seat for more than two decades before that. His son succeeded him after the elder Dingell’s death in 1955.
