Conyers crushes foe after ballot scare

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) has crushed his primary foe, all but guaranteeing him a 26th term in Congress.

{mosads}The Associated Press has called the race for Conyers, who led Rev. Horace Sheffield (D) by 75 percent to 25 percent with 41 percent of precincts reporting.

Conyers was long expected to cruise in the race against Sheffield, despite his 85-year-old congressman’s advancing age. But Sheffield had challenged whether Conyers’s campaign had submitted enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot.

Early rulings went against him, throwing his future into uncertainty, but after a judge ruled he must appear on the ballot the race was all but over.
