NY Republican ousts veteran House Dem

New York state Sen. Lee Zeldin (R) defeated six-term incumbent Rep. Timothy Bishop (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday.

Zeldin topped Bishop by 54.8 percent to 45.2 percent with 100 percent of votes tallied.

{mosads}Zeldin had pulled ahead of Bishop in recent polls in the eastern Long Island district.

The National Republican Congressional Committee ran ads against Bishop, hitting him for being the subject of an ethics probe. 

Bishop allegedly helped a constituent in 2012 obtain a permit to use fireworks. Before those permits were received, though, a Bishop staffer had asked the constituent for a campaign contribution.

Bishop denied wrongdoing and the constituent involved called the issue a “nonstory.”
