Boehner, who took over as leader of the House following major GOP gains in 2010, ran uncontested in his Ohio district. Meanwhile, Cantor opened up a substantial lead over his opponent, attorney Wayne Powell.
Powell received a bit of star power to boost his campaign, however, as actress Madeleine Stowe threw her support behind the challenger, citing his support for abortion rights. The Golden Globe nominee help fundraise for Powell and appeared at rallies to support his candidacy.
Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), head of the National Republican Congressional Committee, also cruised to re-election, as his victory was projected immediately after polls closed in Texas. He defeated his Democratic challenger, Katherine Savers McGovern.
