GOP swaps ‘Contract’ for ‘Commitment’

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) gave peeks Sunday at the “Commitment to America” that would replace the GOP’s “Contract With America” in the run-up to midterm elections.

McCarthy, the chief deputy whip who gave the Republicans’ weekly address on Saturday, said on “Fox News Sunday” that compared to the Republicans’ position going into 1994 elections, “this is a much better year shaping up earlier, but there’s still a distance to go.”

{mosads}”I think the opportunity is there for Republicans to take control of the House,” McCarthy added. “…The country is very frustrated and angry with the arrogance of Washington.”

He said the “Commitment” would place a greater emphasis on Internet tools to get the message out and “help restore trust… using our principles to find what’s best for America.”

It would also hold Republicans’ feet to the fire, McCarthy said, as the “Commitment” would pledge what the GOP would not do.

“If we do not do the job, throw us out,” he said.

On the most recent scandal with the Republican National Committee, McCarthy did not say that Chairman Michael Steele should step aside, but said there needed to be more accountability at the RNC and some potential shake-ups to bring back the trust of donors.

“The RNC does have some challenges that they need to correct,” he said.
