Liberal group seeks to defeat Rahm in runoff
Another progressive campaign group is looking to defeat Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) as he heads for a runoff.
{mosads}The Progressive Change Campaign Committee sent out an email to its supporters Wednesday asking them to donate to the former White House chief of staff’s opponent, Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.
“Garcia has the momentum — let’s show him some love,” the email said. “Chip in $6 to help him defeat one of the worst corporate Democrats in America.”
Garcia is also backed by the liberal MoveOn.org.
On Tuesday night, Emanuel fell short of the 50 percent he needed to avoid a runoff, despite outspending the rest of the field.
His campaign and its allies raised tens of millions of dollars in the race and rolled out endorsements from a range of prominent Chicagoans, including President Obama.
In the runoff, Garcia will have to try to counter Emanuel’s funding advantage while also consolidating the support of the three other candidates who challenged the mayor.
