Poll: Cain edges Perry among Texas GOP

Herman Cain wins 27 percent and Rick Perry 26 percent among self-identified Republican voters living in Texas, according to a new survey by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune.

{mosads}Among conservative voters, Cain takes a stronger lead over the Texas governor.

“Maybe the most important number is that Cain is up 37 percent to 24 percent among the most conservative voters,” said Daron Shaw, co-director of the poll. Cain also carries a lead in liberal-leaning cities such as Austin and Houston.

Forty-four percent of Texas voters surveyed also disapproved of Perry’s job performance as governor, compared to President Obama’s 57 percent disapproval rate in Texas. The survey also shows that in a hypothetical match-up against Obama, Perry would win 45-37.

Mitt Romney, the front-runner candidate in national polls, only takes 9 percent of the vote in Texas according to the survey, although respondents indicated they would vote for him over Obama. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) took third place in the poll, with 12 percent.

The margin of error for the survey is 3 percent.
