Poll: Colbert would steal votes from Obama running as an independent
{mosads}The poll also found that Colbert is slightly more popular than Romney, with 36 percent of voters surveyed indicating they have a “favorable” opinion of him compared to the former Massachusetts governor’s 35 percent, but the difference is within the poll’s margin of error, which is 4 percentage points.
Obama was the most popular of the group, with a 47 percent favorability rating.
Romney polls the best of the GOP presidential candidates in head-to-head match-ups with Obama, although Obama still wins 49-44. Against Newt Gingrich, Obama wins 49-42; against Ron Paul the president wins 47-42; against Rick Santorum he wins 50-42, and against Rick Perry its 51-40.
A PPP poll earlier this month found Colbert at 5 percent among the GOP presidential candidates in South Carolina.
Colbert subsequently declared on his “Colbert Report” show that he was forming an “exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the President of the United States of South Carolina.” However, he cannot appear as a write-in candidate on South Carolina’s ballot.
