Poll: Obama holds 5-point lead over Romney in Michigan

President Obama is leading Mitt Romney by 5 percentage-points in Michigan, according to a new poll of likely voters in the state.

The survey, conducted by the Glengariff Group and reported in the Detroit News, shows an even wider margin for Obama among female voters. He leads the former Massachusetts governor by 12 points — 47 percent to Romney’s 35 percent.

{mosads}Among all voters surveyed, Obama led Romney 45 percent to 39.5 percent in Michigan.

Michigan was central to Romney’s success in the GOP primary. He grew up there, and his father was governor. Romney campaigned aggressively against the government’s auto industry bailout, but has lately said that he deserves credit for the industry’s recovery.

Saul Anuzis, a former chairman of the state Republican Party, told the Detroit News that the poll is “great news” because it shows that Obama will have to work hard to defend a state he won in 2008.
