Poll finds Romney ahead in Wisconsin after recall election

Mitt Romney has overtaken President Obama in the battleground state of Wisconsin, according to the latest survey from conservative polling outlet Rasmussen.

Romney leads Obama 47 to 44 percent, which is within the poll’s 4.5 perent margin of error. Obama led the same poll 49 to 44 last month, and was up 52 to 41 in March.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) won his recall election last Tuesday, and many believe the recall election will mobilize and energize the GOP base for the presidential election.

{mosads}Obama still has a 3.5 point lead according to the Real Clear Politics average of Wisconsin polls, although most of the data contributing to that average is from before the recall election. Obama led the first poll to be conducted in Wisconsin after the recall election, a We Ask America poll released last week, 48 to 43.

Wisconsin is one of 12 battleground states — the others are Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire — that will be critical in determining the outcome of the 2012 election.

In a conference earlier this month, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus touted the party’s efforts in Wisconsin, saying that “if Wisconsin goes red, it’s lights out for Barack Obama.”

Wisconsin hasn’t backed a Republican for president since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
