Dems target Christie in Super Bowl-themed ad

Democrats are running a Super Bowl-themed ad against Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) to coincide with today’s big game in Christie’s home state of New Jersey.

The Democratic National Committee is seeking to capitalize on the George Washington Bridge lane-closure scandal to eliminate one of the strongest potential Republican candidates in the 2016 presidential election. The online ad paints Christie as a star player who’s dropping the ball, playing off allegations by former Port Authority official David Wildstein, who said Christie knew about the lane closures.

“The big game is about to begin. A rising star shows promise,” the ad says over footage of players. It then cuts to a television appearance of Christie berating the federal government.

“Maybe the folks in Washington, D.C., should tune in their TVs right now to see how it’s done,” the governor says.

The ad then cuts to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer talking about Wildstein’s allegations.

“They say he’s unstoppable,” says the ad, before showing a player fumbling the ball. “Unless he chokes.”

Christie denies he had any advance knowledge of the lane closures. His office sent around an email late Saturday accusing Wildstein, who oversaw the lane closures, of lying to protect himself.

“It’s just the first quarter,” the ad concludes. “It’s going to be a long game.”
