Rubio touts immigration record

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Monday that he had a stronger record on immigration than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D).

“Well, I don’t know about the others, but I’ve done more immigration than Hillary Clinton ever did,” Rubio, who announced Monday that he is running for president, told NPR News.

“I mean, I helped pass an immigration bill in a Senate dominated by Democrats. And that’s more than she’s ever done. She’s given speeches on it, but she’s never done anything on it.”

Clinton announced Sunday that she would seek the Democratic nomination for president.

Portions of Rubio’s interview will air Tuesday on Morning Edition.

Rubio has taken heat from some of his fellow Republicans over his 2013 support for comprehensive immigration reform. He has since said that he would not support other reforms before new border security measures are introduced.

The issue is a particularly salient as campaigns eye Latino voters — a growing bloc within the electorate.
