Clinton calls for paid family leave in Mother’s Day message
Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is calling for guaranteed paid family leave in a video message for Mother’s Day.
The former secretary of State said it is “outrageous” that the United States is “the only developed country” that does not guaranteed paid leave for workers who have children.
“At a time that should be so exciting and joyful, I see so many women just distraught,” Clinton said in voiceover during the roughly two-minute video posted on YouTube.
“They have to immediately go back to work. They don’t know how they are going to manage.”
Clinton, who called her own mother her “guiding light,” twice mentioned her infant granddaughter in a video full of clips of mothers and children.
If past elections serve as any indication, women voters are expected to be a boost for Clinton in the 2016 presidential contest.
The political world — from Twitter to the Sunday talk shows to a South Carolina conservative summit — was full of best wishes for Mother’s Day this weekend.
