Castro ‘flattered’ by Clinton VP chatter

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro said he is “flattered” by rumors that Hillary Clinton is considering him for her running mate, he said during an interview Tuesday.

“I have seen that talk and think anybody would be flattered by that,” he said during an interview on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.

{mosads}“I’m certainly flattered by it, but I’m not holding my breath, Andrea. I’m trying to do a great job at HUD.”

Castro said that he’s devoted to his Cabinet position and that the best way to have a “good future” is to do a “great job with what is in front of you.”

The former San Antonio mayor has long been floated on lists of potential vice presidential picks for 2016, and former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros added new fuels to those rumors over the weekend.

Cisneros told Univision that people from both Washington and Clinton’s campaign have told him that Castro is the “superior candidate” for vice president.

Castro could both provide a gender balance on the Democratic ticket and add a Hispanic face in an election where that voting bloc could prove decisive.

During the interview, Castro also commended the city of Las Angeles, which enacted a $15 minimum wage this week.

“It strikes at the heart of what a lot of folks are concerned about out there in our country today, which is this issue of making sure that, in this 21st Century, America remains the undisputed land of opportunity,” he said.

“And in order to achieve that for people who are working hard, you need to make sure that they are fairly compensated.”
