Fiorina: US education ‘a big problem’

GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina said on Sunday she would give Common Core a failing grade for how it teaches American students.

{mosads}“Our education system is a big problem,” Fiorina told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.”

“When a Washington bureaucracy gets involved in program, it becomes heavy-handed and standardized,” she said. “It’s how Washington bureaucracy works.”

Common Core provides learning guidelines for K-12 students as they complete each grade of their schooling.

Fiorina pointed to China on Sunday as an example of how federal involvement in education could hurt a country’s knowledge base.

“China has put in place an education system that standardizes behavior,” she said. “It is part of their regime’s oppression.”

Fiorina said that Beijing’s approach had made the Chinese “not terribly imaginative,” Bloomberg reported last Tuesday.

The former Hewlett-Packard CEO added on Sunday that Common Core did not benefit U.S. families for similar reasons.

“Common Core, unfortunately, limits parents’ choices,” Fiorina said. “It will, over time, limit our children’s options.”

Fiorina’s remarks come as she tries to emerge from a crowded 2016 presidential field.

She also argued on Sunday that her business background was an asset rather than a liability for her chances on the campaign trail.

“I am not a neophyte, but I am certainly not a professional politician,” Fiorina said.

“It is also true I have been in and around government for many years,” she added.

“It is not accurate to say I don’t know anything about politics,” Fiorina told Wallace, rebuffing criticism that she lacks the experience necessary for the Oval Office.

Fiorina unveiled her presidential campaign on May 4.

She is so far the only female GOP presidential candidate competing next election cycle.
