Jimmy Carter: Trump’s comments ‘very stupid’

Former President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday called Donald Trump’s comments on immigration “very stupid” and suggested the GOP contender wouldn’t last long in the race.

“I think he’s made some very stupid statements and, I think, ill-advised statements about immigrants,” Carter told CNN host Jake Tapper on “The Lead.”

{mosads}“He’ll get a tiny little part of the Republican Party support — the ones that agree with him in an extreme way — but he’s a flash in the pan,” Carter added.

Trump’s comments about Mexico during his presidential launch have sparked outrage.

“They’re sending people who have a lot of problems,” Trump said.

“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” he added. “And some, I assume, are good people.”

Trump has repeatedly defended his statements, despite losing multiple business ties over his language.

Macy’s, NASCAR, NBC and Univision have all terminated corporate partnerships with Trump following the public outcry over his comments.

His language has also led many Republicans to worry that he could hurt the party’s effort to win over Hispanic voters in 2016.

The real estate tycoon on Thursday also admitted that Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus suggested he “tone it down” on immigration during a phone call.

Carter also predicted Wednesday that Hillary Clinton will win the Democratic nomination.

“I don’t think there’s much doubt that, in the long term, Hillary’s still the pre-eminent candidate for the Democratic nomination,” he told Tapper.

“She and Bill together have made probably the most acutely aware and knowledgeable and competent political team that we’ve ever seen,” he said of the former secretary of State and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Carter had earlier voiced skepticism about Hillary Clinton’s track record compared to her husband.

“I think they’re both superb politicians,” he said recently on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I think Bill has a reputation of being maybe one of the best politicians who ever lived in his success, not only when he was in office but since then,” Carter said.

“And I don’t doubt that Hillary will have learned all, or had to begin with, the same abilities as a politician,” he added. “But I think that still has to be proven.”
