Christie fed up with questions about Trump
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday voiced frustration with media coverage of Donald Trump, suggesting issues such as entitlement and education reform should get attention instead.
“Enough, we’ve answered the question,” Christie, a GOP presidential candidate, said in an interview on “Fox and Friends” when asked about controversial comments Trump made nearly four weeks ago.
{mosads}”Donald is a friend, I’ve known him for 13 years. I like him personally, but his comments were inappropriate. That’s the 50th time I’ve said it, and it’s going to be the last time I say it,” Christie said.
“Seriously, when I’m out there talking to folks, nobody in the real world asks me about this. Nobody. But every time I get on a media show, all anybody wants to talk about is Donald Trump,” he added.
Trump basked in media attention over the weekend at a rally with thousands of people in Phoenix. He used the event to push tougher security measures along the nation’s southern border.
The celebrity real estate developer and 2016 GOP presidential candidate has doubled down on his June 16 remarks that criminals and rapists are among those emigrating from Mexico to the United States.
Republicans have worried that the reality TV star’s 2016 bid could detract from other candidates, but the spotlight on Trump’s candidacy shows no signs of dimming now that the businessman is surging in the polls.
His rise has forced the rest of the GOP field, including Christie, to answer a chorus of questions about Trump and his immigration positions.
“His comments have nothing to do with … immigration, and how we deal with the immigration system,” Christie said Monday, suggesting a wall as advocated by Trump was “not realistic nor effective.”
“We need to use human intelligence, we need to use electronic intelligence, we need to use E-Verify because these folks are coming here to work,” Christie said.
