Graham: Trump ‘appealing to the dark side’ of politics

ABC US News | World News

Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) said Sunday that fellow Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is “appealing to the dark side of American politics” and should be avoided.

{mosads}”I would ask the Republican Party to understand why most major companies are firing Mr. Trump, and I don’t think we should hire him,” Graham said during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”

“I think he’s appealing to the dark side of American politics. He is not offering solutions to hard, complicated problems. He is basically selling fear and prejudice,” Graham said.

Several Republicans including Graham have lashed out at Trump, a celebrity real estate developer who has seen weeks of media attention stemming from his controversial remarks on immigrants from Mexico.

Trump has hit back, and Graham said Sunday said he had a new iPhone thanks to Trump giving out his number publicly last week during a campaign stop in South Carolina after Graham called him a “jackass.”

“If you say most illegal immigrants are drug dealers and rapists, there are people that want to believe that,” Graham said Sunday. “He’s appealing to fear and prejudice. And there’s a market for that.”

A hawkish Republican lawmaker, Graham said that Trump is “bankrupt” when it comes to being qualified to be commander-in-chief after remarks questioning Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) status as a war hero.
