Christie: We have to earn voters’ trust back

Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) said on Wednesday that he understands why Americans are turning away from the political establishment heading into 2016.

{mosads}The GOP presidential candidate argued that everyday citizens are disenchanted by a government that repeatedly violates their trust in its institutions.

“People are frustrated because government can’t do even the most basic tasks,” he told radio host Laura Ingraham on the “Laura Ingraham Show.”

“Americans feel like their generosity as a people is being taken advantage of,” said Christie.

“Enough with the games,” he added. “Enough with gaming the system. We have to earn their optimism back and their trust back.”

Christie also charged that government is fundamentally failing its constituents by ignoring the laws it must supposedly enforce.

“There is going to be law enforced in this country again if I’m president,” he said. “I’m the guy.

“The American people can hear me clearly,” Christie continued. “It’s not hard to understand what I mean.

“This is just something goes around in the air or the water around the White House,” he added, citing the “lawlessness” of President Obama and his administration.

Christie’s remarks come as he struggles for a place on the second GOP presidential debate’s main stage on Sept. 16.

CNN, the event’s host, is limiting its prime-time event to the top 10 national contenders based on an average of national polls from Aug. 6 to Sept. 10.

The latest RealClearPolitics average of national samplings has Christie tied for 10th place with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) at 3 percent support.

Christie said on Wednesday that he is trying his hardest to qualify for the later debate without speaking negatively about CNN’s rules.

“Whatever rules they want to play by, I’ll play by,” he said of CNN. “No one has ever won a game by complaining to the umpires.

“I will make that stage,” the New Jersey lawmaker insisted. “I’m not worried about it.”
