Poll: Clinton’s favorability tumbles

A poll released by Gallup on Friday shows Hillary Clinton’s favorability rating near an all-time low.

Only 41 percent of respondents said they have a favorable view of the Democratic presidential front-runner, compared to 51 percent who view her unfavorably.

{mosads}Clinton’s numbers were only lower in 1992, when only 38 percent of the public viewed the former first lady favorably. But Gallup said that number was more a product of unfamiliarity than disapproval.

Clinton is embroiled in a controversy over a personal email server she used while secretary of State.

The FBI has launched an investigation into whether Clinton transmitted classified documents over the server, which many perceive to be a threat to national security.

A recent review of thousands of Clinton’s emails found several with sections blacked out by State Department officials, which means they contain information that would be considered classified today.

Despite her dipping favorability numbers generally, Gallup said, “she remains well-liked among Democrats and independents who lean Democratic,” with 74 percent having a favorable view of her, the same as in July. 

She still holds the lead in the Democratic primary, drawing 49 percent support nationwide, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polls. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) trails with 25 percent support, followed by Vice President Biden, who is contemplating a run at the White House, with 14 percent support.

Gallup polled 1,000 adults who identify as Democrats or independents who lean Democratic from Aug. 19 to Sept. 1. The margin of error is 6 percentage points.
