Rand: Trump ‘deserves both barrels’ in GOP debate
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says he will not hold back in attacking Donald Trump as a false conservative during the second GOP presidential debate Wednesday night.
“I think he deserves both barrels,” he said on Tuesday, according to The Daily Caller. “I want to make sure everyone in the country knows he’s a fake conservative.”
“The message hasn’t penetrated yet that Donald Trump isn’t one of us,” Paul said. “He’s barely a Republican. He’s been a Democrat.”
“I think ultimately when voters fully grasp who he is and what he supports, I think they’ll run away with their hair on fire,” the Kentucky lawmaker added.
Paul then argued during The Daily Caller interview on CNN that Trump’s bombastic personality renders him unfit for the Oval Office next year.
“Do we really want someone in charge of our nuclear arsenal who goes around basically using the insults of a junior high, or a sophomore in high school?” Paul asked.
“That’s not the kind of person we want to be practicing the diplomacy of the United States,” he added.
Paul’s falling national poll numbers barely qualified him for CNN’s main stage event.
He currently ranks 10th out of 16 Republican White House hopefuls with 2.7 percent, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of samplings.
Trump, meanwhile, remains the front-runner in next year’s race for the GOP presidential nomination with 29.8 percent.
He has repeatedly taunted Paul’s standing in the polls.
