New York mayor: Rubio needs to reread his Bible

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) says Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fl.) does not understand Catholic teaching when it comes to one’s responsibility for the poor.

{mosads}“I would strongly urge Sen. Rubio to go back and reread ‘The Sermon on the Mount,’ ” de Blasio said on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “Clearly, the core of Catholic teachings and Christian teachings talks about the economic realities that people face and has for thousands of years.”

“I’m surprised Mr. Rubio doesn’t understand that,” he added.

Rubio, who is seeking the GOP presidential nomination, said earlier on the program that he agrees with Pope Francis on religious teaching, but disputed the pontiff’s authority on political and economic issues.

“The pope, as an individual, an important figure in the world, also has political opinions,” Rubio said. “And those, of course, we are free to disagree with.”

Pope Francis has been an outspoken critic of capitalism and an advocate for climate change awareness.

The pope kicked off his North American tour by landing in Havana, Cuba, on Saturday. He will spend three days in the communist nation before flying to the U.S. on Tuesday.
