Trump dodges Colbert’s birther question, talks border wall
GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump late Tuesday passed on an opportunity to say whether President Obama was born in the U.S., instead talking about illegal immigration.
{mosads}”I’m going to throw you up a big, fat meatball for you to hit out of the park right now,” Stephen Colbert said on “The Late Show.”
“This is the last time you have to address this question if you hit the ball, OK? … Barack Obama: born in the United States?” Colbert asked, pitching the statement to Trump.
“You know, I don’t talk about it anymore,” Trump said, putting up his hands and pushing back on the question. “I talk about jobs, I talk about our veterans being horribly treated.”
The real estate tycoon, who has led the GOP field in polls for weeks, has been pressed on the issue after not addressing supporters last week who said Obama is “not even an American” and “is a Muslim.”
Trump, who was widely criticized for not correcting the supporters, defended his response during an interview to be broadcast Sunday night on “60 Minutes.”
“I don’t have to defend President Obama. He’s not going to defend me. So whether you agree with the man or don’t agree, and there were people in that audience, as you noticed, that did agree with him,” Trump said when asked about the Muslim comments by Scott Pelley during the interview, a portion of which was broadcast Tuesday on “CBS Evening News.”
“It was a testing moment for a man running for president,” Pelley responded.
“I don’t think so,” Trump said.
During the appearance with Colbert, Trump focused instead on discussing his plans to build a wall along the nation’s southern border, reiterating that he would make Mexico pay for it.
“In that wall we’re going to have a beautiful, big, fat door where people can come into the country … but they have to come in legally.”
