Jeb Bush’s son: Rubio should ‘drop out or do something’
Jeb Bush’s son is taking a shot at Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), one of his father’s rivals for the Republican presidential nomination.
“As a Floridian, I’m a little disappointed, because he’s missing, like, 35 percent of his votes,” Jeb Bush Jr. said of Rubio’s Senate attendance before an audience of college students Thursday afternoon, Politico reported.
{mosads}”And it’s just, kind of, like, dude, you know, either drop out or do something, but we’re paying you to do something. It ain’t run for president,” he added, speaking to more than two dozen Republicans at New York University.
“We’re way ahead of Marco’s campaign,” Bush said, according to the newspaper. “We’ve got four offices set up in Florida. Our national headquarters is there. Marco doesn’t have an office in Florida.”
The comments reflect an increasingly testy relationship between the Bush and Rubio camps amid pressure to raise funds and climb in the polls ahead of the third GOP debate later this month.
Bush’s campaign pulled in $13.4 million between July and September, while Rubio raised $5.7 million, the Tampa Bay Times noted. Both campaigns have similar amounts of cash on hand for the race; Bush has more than $10 million and Rubio has $9.7 million.
Rubio’s campaign indicated that it raised $6 million during the third quarter and had $11 million in the bank. But more than a $1 million of that is intended for the general election only, the Times noted.
“Thanks to smart budgeting and fiscal discipline, Marco Rubio for President started October with more money in the bank than Jeb Bush for President and most other campaigns,” Rubio’s campaign said Thursday.
Bush’s campaign on Friday questioned Rubio’s fundraising numbers in a tweet:
Lying about budgets. Guess Marco picked up something in the Senate. https://t.co/mCSILB3VjK
