Ricky Martin to endorse Hillary

Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin is expected to announce his support of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 race ahead of her Hispanic outreach in Florida on Wednesday.

Martin praised Clinton for standing with the Latino community amid Republican primary front-runner Donald Trump’s polarizing rhetoric on immigration.

“Our community has been continuously attacked by Donald Trump and other Republican presidential candidates,” Martin told BuzzFeed News on Wednesday. “A few months ago I raised my voice against Trump’s hateful rhetoric and standing with me was Hillary Clinton.”

{mosads}“Time after time, Hillary has shown her commitment to the Latino community and that is why I’m proud to support her and to stand with her because ella está con nosotros y nuestras familias [she is with us and our families],” he added.

Clinton, the Democratic primary front-runner, has garnered support for her White House run from other celebrities such as Katy Perry and Marc Anthony.

But Democratic strategist Maria Cardona, a Clinton supporter, told BuzzFeed Martin’s endorsement carries weight in politically active circles.

“He is seen as a heavyweight on issues like civil rights and LGBT issues and was one of the first ones to call out Donald Trump for his comments about Mexican immigrants,” Cardona said.

Martin previously said that Trump makes his “blood boil.”

Clinton will attend a morning fundraiser in Tampa, Fla., on Wednesday at the home Alex Sink, the Democratic nominee in the 2010 Florida gubernatorial race, before making campaign stops in Orlando, Jacksonville, and Miami.
