Hillary: Bill’s not a ‘smug vegan’

Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton says her husband, Bill Clinton, does not fit the stereotype of a smug vegan.

“I know that former President Clinton, your husband, is a vegan,” late-night host Stephen Colbert told Hillary Clinton during an interview in New York’s Carnegie Deli, which aired Monday night.

“Is he going to give you any grief on this, any friction, for eating meat?”

{mosads}“No,” the she responded.

“He’s not a smug vegan?” Colbert asked.

“He’s really not,” Clinton retorted.

“I think that legally makes him not a vegan,” Colbert said, before launching into an impression of Bill Clinton scolding meat-eaters: “He never says, like, ‘That sandwich had a face. That sandwich is somebody’s little baby.’ ”

“He doesn’t say that,” the former first lady said. “He’s a very open-minded vegan.”

Colbert also asked Clinton about the worst food she has eaten on the campaign trail.

“You don’t have to say what state, because we’ll know it is Iowa,” the CBS late-night show host joked. “They’ll fry anything and put it on a stick down there.”

“When you’re walking around the [Iowa State] Fair, you don’t want to stop, sit down and eat,” Clinton responded. “If you get it on a stick, you can actually continue to walk.”

“You can enjoy the fair without being deprived of your meat,” Colbert quipped.

Clinton added that she would cooperate with Republicans should she ultimately win the White House next November.

“When I actually have a job, as opposed to [running] for a job, I actually get things done with the Republicans,” she said. “I did — as first lady, as senator, as secretary of State.”
